About Cangshan Mountain Nature Reserve

Located in Yunnan Province, China, Cangshan Mountain Nature Reserve encompasses the striking Cangshan mountain range, towering over the Erhai Lake and the historic city of Dali. The reserve covers a vertical span from low river basins up to rugged peaks reaching over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), showcasing a rich mosaic of temperate forests, alpine meadows, limestone cliffs, and deep ravines. This elevational gradient supports significant biodiversity, including endemic plant species, diverse bird life, and unique amphibians. The area has strong cultural ties with the local Bai ethnic group and historic Buddhist sites nestled in the mountains. Visitors are drawn to Cangshan for its extensive network of trails, waterfalls such as the famous Qilu Waterfall, and stunning panoramic vistas of Erhai Lake and the surrounding valleys. The reserve is prized for quiet nature walks, birdwatching, botanical exploration, and photography. Several cable cars offer easy access to higher elevations for visitors interested in less strenuous visits. The reserve is a critical conservation area preserving fragile montane ecosystems within one of China's biodiversity hotspots and is a prime example of harmonious coexistence between natural heritage and centuries-old cultural landscapes.
